Priestleys accentuation is characterisation and this is appeared inside his stage directions.à Priestleys stage headings are pescriptive and definite. This shows he is worried about the reaction and view of his crowd. Also, the headings for the passageway of Inspector Goole are very specific.à In this exposition, I will look at Priestleys initially set of stage bearings, which exhort the chiefs setting for Act One.à The furniture ought to be picked to show up, strong, generous, and, vigorously open to, demonstrating Arthur Birlings quality yet conceivably obscene and faulty taste and even views.à Priestleys stage bearings are so pescriptive he even notices the lighting. Before the Inspector enters, the lighting is, pink and cozy, proposing a warm, lovely climate fitting for a nearby family assembling. The light the unexpectedly changes to, brilliant and hard, as the Inspector enters, proposing in a visual illustration, the fierce, firm way Inspector Goole illuminates the familiys shameful insider facts. We will compose a custom exposition on The plays key subjects explicitly for you for just $16.38 $13.9/page Request now Be that as it may, on the off chance that I were the chief I would put the Inspector marginally in the shadows, to represent his puzzling character. I would likewise put light on every individual from the family so the crowd could see their stun and to accentuation the metaphor.à Next, the game plan of the individuals around the table shows Arthur and Sybil Birlings predominance inside the family as the two of them sit at each finish of the table as the most notable individuals do. To underscore their power, I would situate them in a superb, thick wooden seats, diverse to the next relatives seats. Furthermore, the crowd can naturally separate that the family are festivity as the guys are wearing, tails and white ties, and there are additionally, champagne glasses, being gathered up. Riches again is a topic here.à This scene gives the impression of a cheerful and joined family anticipating the future with a level of certainty. In any case, by and large, there are various indications that not everything is the thing that it appears, however these are not especially evident until some other time in the play. Character is likewise significant inside a play. The executive must make the on-screen character outwardly speak to the entertainer just as playing out the Priestleys message through their character.à Priestley communicates the desire for an, ominous, Birling. He is a grandiose, sandimonius character. As a chief, this would urge me to teach the entertainer to extend a dismal, oppressive nearness. The crowd should consider Birling to be scary and somewhat of a domineering jerk as his name would recommend. He should likewise seem well off and of significance. Next, Sybil Birling is introduced to be a scornful, haughty character. She is likewise somewhat highbrow in spite of the fact that she wedded beneath her own economic wellbeing. To mirror this, I would train the on-screen character to talk appropriately, articulating all words effectively. I would dress her in costly garments and fine gems to reverberate her social class. She should likewise be solid and determined.à Priestley requests Sheila to be, exceptionally satisfied with life and rather energized. Sheila is the spoilt kid inside the family; she is somewhat pompous with this. To speak to her character I would request that the entertainer be giggly and over-warm to her fian Gerald. She is very edgy and girly.à Gerald is portrayed as, simple all around reproduced youngster about-town. He ought to be depicted as vain and very sly. He would be an appealing man and seem to have extraordinary regard for Arthur Birling. To demonstrate this I would train the entertainer to be mindful to everything that Birling says. reconnebarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03062518187879694319noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7093953551762255669.post-72860962063591933292020-08-22T13:52:00.001-07:002020-08-22T13:52:34.456-07:00Conjugal VisitsMatrimonial Visits 5 matrimonial appearance can be viewed as an earned benefit just as a control system, whereby the detainee... reconnebarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03062518187879694319noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7093953551762255669.post-63258536052277178092020-08-21T11:34:00.001-07:002020-08-21T11:34:23.613-07:00Consumer Association of Bangladesh1. It is rather sensible since older pupils have more cognition and experience because they took more scientific discipline classs than the 1s younger pupils. Besides. male pupils are more cognizant of the clime alteration than the female pupils. Common errors of the pupils were made on the inquiries sing the effects of the planetary heating and nursery consequence to the environment. Students who read books. newspapers. watch telecasting and can entree to the cyberspace have more cognition about the clime alteration. Having more beginnings of information can add up to the cognition of each pupil. But these beginnings can besides give misconceptions about the information of what they are reading. This may be a job particularly about their cognition about the occurrences in the environment. There are many common constructs about the clime alteration. An illustration of it is that firing fossil fuels uses the ozone bed up. Burning is a chemical procedure and besides follows the jurisprudence of preservation of affair. Combustion merely combines the O and C and does non vanish when it is burned. Another misconception about the clime alteration is that planetary heating is caused by the hole in the ozone bed because it allows more radiation to come in the Earth. That is wrong since it is merely caused by the addition of nursery gases in the ambiance. It is true that the hole in the ozone bed lets in more radiation like UV ( Ultraviolet ) Radiation but it is non a great factor of the planetary heating. Bing cognizant about the environment is a really of import affair. Students or adolescents presents are more funny about anything else but environment. They are more funny to engineering than clime alteration which is bad for everyone. Students must at least be able to cognize the ground of the clime alteration in our environment. Although based on the information gathered. some pupils do non even know those grounds. Bibliography Aston. One important mechanism for thermoregulation seen in turtles is the ability to migrate between land and water habitats. This mechanism was studied using I-button data loggers placed inside marshmallow peeps to record temperatures In two different microhabitats; one In a stream and the other on the bank adjacent to the stream. Five samples were placed in each microhabitat and temperature was recorded every minute for 20 minutes. It was hypothesized that turtles In moving waters, such as streams, would exhibit lower body temperatures than those residing on banks alongside streams due to convection of the moving water. The results of this experiment Indicated a slgnlflcant dfference between body temperatures of the model turtles in each microhabitat. The temperatures of the samples in the stream were significantly lower than those of the samples on the bank. These results indicate that the convection from the moving stream waters provide effective means for lowering body temperature in ectotherms nd, therefore, can be a critical behavioral adaptation for turtles Inhabltlng areas with warmer climates. Introduction Body temperature is a characteristic that is crucial to an organisms survival. It affects numerous biological processes In organisms Including growth, metabolism, reproduction, and performance (Fitzgerald et al. 2006). In endothermic organisms, body temperature Is regulated by metabolism. However, In ectothermic organisms, such as turtles, body temperature Is not maintained by metabolism; instead they must rely on the thermal environment surrounding them to regulate their body emperature. The mechanisms most responsible for body temperature changes In ectotherms include radiation, conduction, convection, and evaporation. Radiation is the gain or loss of heat energy from the sun. This mechanism Involves ectothermic organisms changing their body temperature by changing their position in relation to the sun. Convection is or the gain or loss of heat to or from an organism in moving fluid such as water or the wind. Convection causes the body temperature of the ectotherm to equilibrate towards the temperature of the surrounding air or water. Conduction Is the gain or loss of heat to or from surfaces, and evaporation, or the loss of heat due to the conversion of liquid water on the body to gas (Thermal environments [date unknown]). These mechanisms of thermoregulation can govern the behavior of ectotherms_ In order to regulate their body temperature, ectotherms must either utilize these mechanisms by finding habitats that expose them to these tors protection from these elements. Semi-aquatic common snapping turtles in South Carolina, Chelydra serpentina, use behavioral adaptations such as basking in the sun to raise body temperature or swimming in streams, rivers, lakes, etc. o lower their body temperature (Bennett et al. 2005). In a body of moving water, such as a stream, convection from the movement of the water causes the turtles body temperature to equilibrate to the temperature of the water at a rapid rate. This is beneficial because it allows turtles to quickly lower their body temperature when necessary. It can be a disadvantage for turtles because they may need to use water to find food or escape predators even when the water temperature is lower than their optimal temperature ranges. The rapid heat loss due to the convection of moving water will cause the urtles body temperature to quickly equilibrate toward the lower water temperature which may hinder the performance level of the turtle. Fortunately, according to laboratory studies, reptiles like the turtle are able to heat faster than they cool off so they can raise their body temperatures fairly rapidly by basking in the sunlight (Fitzgerald et al. 06). These behavioral adaptations of turtles that allow them to migrate between microhabitats with different thermal environments quite easily, allow turtles to survive in more diverse climates, escape from certain predators, and orage for food in more locations. This ability to adapt is especially important today when we are facing issues such as global warming and seeing so many species become endangered or even extinct. This experiment was done in order to observe the temperature differences between ectotherms, specifically the Chelydra serpentina turtles, in different microhabitats in order to see how much of an effect changing habitats has on a turtles body temperature. In order to do this, a stream was chosen for the first microhabitat and the bank along the sides of the stream for the second microhabitat. Both microhabitats were located in the shade in attempt to eliminate the effect of radiation on body temperature. It was hypothesis was that the turtles in the stream would have a much lower body temperature than those on the bank due to convection. To model the turtles, I-buttons placed inside of marshmallow peeps were used. Materials and Methods The samples used to model the Chelydra serpentina were I-button data loggers each placed in the center of a marshmallow peep. The use of peeps made it easier to suspend the I-buttons in various locations. In order to keep the I-buttons inside each f the peeps, scissors were used to cut small circles in the center of each peep. These I-buttons record the temperature every minute. These I-buttons were kept on ice in a thermos prior to beginning the experiment in order to create a thermal rise that facilitated locating the start of the experimental data when extracting it from the l- buttons. The habitat used for the experiment was a shaded area containing a stream and the bank surrounding the stream where turtles may inhabit in order to seek refuge from the hot temperatures of South Carolina at noon during the summer. The reek was shallow, about a foot deep, and contained mostly sand with a few larger rocks on the bottom with a steady current. Both areas were completely shaded to eliminate radiation as a factor. A total of ten peeps were used and five were placed in different areas in a stream, while the other five were placed in various areas along the bank of the stream. Strings were tied to the samples placed in the stream and samples submerged and to keep them from being carried away with the current. The samples were left in their locations for twenty minutes in order to give the I-buttons ample time to equilibrate to the environment. This data was then extracted from the I-buttons and organized by temperature per minute for each sample in separate excel tables for each microhabitat. The average, standard deviation, confidence interval, and upper and lower confidence intervals for the temperature each minute was calculated using excel for each of the microhabitats. The temperatures for the last minute, the 20th minute, for each sample were organized into another table separated by microhabitat. reconnebarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03062518187879694319noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7093953551762255669.post-61921044290001844732020-03-12T02:13:00.001-07:002020-03-12T02:13:03.340-07:00Pros and Cons of Outsourcing IT ManagementPros and Cons of Outsourcing IT Management Free Online Research Papers On week 5 of our Managerial Accounting class, we were asked to view several websites and choose an activity that is necessary to outsource for a companyââ¬â¢s operations. Then we were asked to discuss the pros and cons of outsourcing that activity. This was a very intriguing subject that provoked a lot of thought and discussion amongst the class. Because of this great discussion, I have decided to make Outsourcing the topic of my Final Project. Outsourcing is quickly becoming a huge trend in the corporate world. ââ¬Å"Whats new is a concentrated effort to outsource back-office support operationse.g., IT, finance accounting, human resources, and procurementto reduce costs and heighten performance, according to a report from Houston-based analyst firm EquaTerra : Outsourcing Trends in the Automotive, Manufacturing, and High-Tech Industriesâ⬠(Fulcher, 2007). According to the above article, outsourcing is now being used in many industries. In order to better focus my p aper, I will pick the most debated and used outsourcing activity; Information Technology. Companies are increasingly outsourcing the management of information technology (IT) for reasons that include concern for cost and quality, lagging IT performance, supplier pressure, access to special technical and application skills, and other financial factors. The outsourcing solution is acceptable to large and small companies alike because corporate strategies are now more common and the IT environment is changing rapidly. Because of cost and quality advantages, I will prove that outsourcing is a very advantageous way to do business. Although the mix of factors raising the possibility of outsourcing varies widely from one company to another, there are a series of themes that explain most of the pressures to outsource. To get a better understanding of outsourcing, let walk through the process. When a customer calls a toll-free customer service telephone number, it is possible that the call will be routed to a foreign country such as India or Argentina. A technician in that country trained by the American company to answer questions will solve the customers problem, often within a few minutes, and the customer will typically not have any idea where the call center is located. Increasingly, American companies are taking advantage of highly educated labor outside the United States where wages can be one-tenth of what these companies would pay employees within the United States. This alone makes it financially viable to investigate outsourcing in Industry. As mentioned above, India seems to be the leader in foreign o utsourcing. ââ¬Å"For years, Indian developers have had a reputation as the offshore programming outsourcers of choice for Western corporations because of their high-quality, low-cost coding help. Now the continued availability of skilled manpower at costs far lower than in the West, cultural factors, economic conditions, and an improving telecommunications infrastructure in India and worldwide is leading U.S. and European companies to tap the skills of Indian outsourcers in other areas. Indian companies are providing sophisticated, IT-enabled back-office services for customer interaction and data processingâ⬠(Ribeiro, 2001). It would be irresponsible of me to not mention some of the negatives that have circulated recently in outsourcing. Media coverage tends to focus on those American workers who are put out of work due to outsourcing. In many cases, jobs are transferred overseas with the result that American workers are put out of work. In other cases, jobs are simply created in the foreign country which limits job creation in the United States. The current presidential candidates on both sides talk about the need to keep jobs in America. Others also mention that by outsourcing jobs, it is putting a big strain on the American Economy. But, there are some economic analysts who maintain that relocating jobs overseas will result in more and better jobs domestically. Keeping the higher skill jobs in America can improve salaries and the economy. This concept could be considered highly debatable. So, are their concerns from the management aspect? First of all, general managersââ¬â¢ are concerned about cost and quality drive outsourcing. The same issues such as getting existing services for a reduced price at acceptable quality standard came up repeatedly. Secondly, failure to meet service standards can force management to find other ways of achieving reliability. It is not atypical to find a company in which cumulative IT management neglect eventually culminated in an out-of-control situation the current IT department could not recover from. Management can see outsourcing as a way to fix a broken department. If someone other than your employee can create a better consultation and knowledge about a product or process, it might be advantageous to outsource that specific process. Third, a firm under intense cost or competitive pressures, which does not see IT as its core competence, may find outsourcing a way to delegate time-consuming, messy problems so it can focus scarce management time and energy on other differentiators. ââ¬Å"Evaluate your companys ability to provide in-house training. If your in-house tech support is unable to adapt to your growing supply chain needs and provide adequate training for new technologies, you should consider outsourcing your companys logistics data and integrating it with that of a service provider that specializes in customized supply chain solutions (Industry Week, pp 67-68). Other financial issues can make outsourcing appealing. One is the opportunity to liquidate the firmââ¬â¢s intangible IT asset, thus strengthening the balance sheet and avoiding a stream of sporadic capital investments in the future. Also, outsourcing can turn a largely fixed-cost business into one with variable costs. This is particularly important for firms whose activities vary widely in volume from one year to another or which face significant downsizing. Other financial benefits from outsourcing included rapid funding of new systems development and economies of scale and scope. As consolidate infrastructure through IT outsourcing, a firm can experience cost reductions in hardware and software licensing, facilities, and support headcount. Hardware and software function can be extremely expensive. Outsourcing, also, can capitalize on an outside vendorââ¬â¢s extensive IT problem solving knowledge. An outside vendor had the ability to get more of the technology that came o ut. They could spend money on investments that a company couldnââ¬â¢t afford internally. That opens up a lot more avenues to future technologies. An outside vendor would manage the IT function more efficiently. A vendorââ¬â¢s main competency is managing computer systems. Through their skills, leverage, and economies of scale, they could provide a level of efficiency that could not be achieved at the outsourcer. Finally, Perhaps most important, outsourcing allow internal IT folks to focus on the development of a new IT infrastructure. Underlying the outsourcing effort is a fundamental strategy to offload legacy applications and operations so a firm could focus on developing new strategic application to support the global business processes, which were being reengineered. There are many ways to manage outsourcing since every company has different culture, strategy, structure, people, and process. Also, many important issues such as structure, Information management operating processes, management processes, and human resources management should be clarified. Many outsourcing contracts are structured for very long periods in a world of fast-moving technical and business change. Eight to ten years is the normal length of a contract in an environment in which computer technology performance is shifting by 20 to 30 percent per year. What is the best and newest toy today is old news tomorrow. Consequently, a deal that made sense at the beginning may take less economic sense three years later and require adjustments to function effectively. The situation from the outsourcerââ¬â¢s perspective is just the reverse. The first year may require a heavy capital payment followed by the extraordinary costs for switching responsibility to them and executing the appropriate cost-reduction initiatives. All this is done in anticipation of a back-loaded profit flow. At precisely the time the outsourcer is finally moving into its earnings stream, the customer, perhaps feeling the need for new services, is chafing under monthly charges and anxious to move to new IT architectures. If the customer has not had experience in partnering activities before, the relationship can develop profound tensions. The evolution of technologies often changes the strategic relevance of IT service to a firm. From the customerââ¬â¢s viewpoint, assigning a commodity service to an outsider is very attractive if the price is right. Delegating a firmââ¬â¢s service differentiator is another matter. The customer that made the original decision on efficiency will judge it differently if using effectiveness criteria later. IT outsourcing has so many positive effects for a company even though it still contains various problem needed to be solved. In the Internet age, any company may want to focus its internal staff on moving it to the environment that will support them tomorrow and outsourcing could be one of the best solutions. Also, outsourcing is really more of an integration of two separate businesses to be successful. Both want to take the best parts of each culture and put them together. In addition, critical success factors including existence of a multi-years, corporate commitment to the IM strategy and outsourcing, and quality culture and attitude should be considered in outsourcing. ââ¬Å"Outsourcing decisions is also called a make or buy decision. It entails a choice between producing a product in house or purchasing it from an outside supplierâ⬠(Hilton, p- 593). What it all comes down to is that if a part of your business can run smoother with the help of an outside side; and can potentially save money in the long run, and then the answer is simple and concise. Outsourcing is continues to be the wave of the future and many different industries will continue to tap into this source of business. As stated in my thesis, I hope I have proved that benefits and advantageous nature of outsourcing. Sources 1- Jim Fulcher (2007, August). Naturally, evidence of conflict can constitute itself in a vast array of different ways. Most notably, conflict can be visibly evidenced by verbal means or be the fact that formerly close colleagues and/or departments are not longer working together with a level of efficiency that was previously realized. However, more nuanced aspects of conflict can be evidenced by the fact that existing processes are not being followed and workflow is either not getting done at all or is being performed by alternative means. Although there are a number of visible means by which conflict can be evidenced on the surface, the sublevels of conflict can also rob an organization of its competitive advantage. Whereas visible conflict is usually easy to note, hidden conflict is much more difficult to find and determine the root cause of. Similarly, due to the fact that many shareholders are naturally reticent to be completely honest with management regarding the true source of the conflict, hidden conflict is one of the means by which an organization can secretly be drained of efficiency, potential, and talent (Mukhtar 44). Within a situation in which hidden conflict is evidenced, one of the most obvious means by which that this is evidenced is the fact that a greatly lower level of moral is seen among the shareholders. Although this is not always indicative of hidden conflict, it is a key indicator that can be utilized to call the leaderââ¬â¢s attention to the fact that underlying levels of conflict may be robbing the organization of efficiency, satisfaction, and talent. More importantly than merely recognizing that conflict exists is of course the measures that can be taken to root it out and ensure that it does not further affect the determinants of the organization which have reconnebarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03062518187879694319noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7093953551762255669.post-46785947942711888242020-02-08T09:25:00.001-08:002020-02-08T09:25:02.743-08:00Strategic Management SLP Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 wordsStrategic Management SLP - Essay Example that the overreliance on the artificial intelligence of computers costs individualââ¬â¢s an arm and leg as far as thinking capacity is concerned (2015). Instead of lifting human thinking ability, the smart software slowly makes us dumb. The gradual process that traces from the industrial revolution is effective in its mission. Carr (2015) asserts that computers have become decision-makers and conduct an analysis that human people are not capable of doing in a short duration. I strongly concur with the author on this opinion. It is true that every human thinking is experiencing overshadowing by the existence of computer software applications. For example, it is challenging to perform simple statistical analysis such as standard deviations, mean, average and others. It is because of the knowledge that software that only requires me to feed the figures and exist. The software minimizes the workload that would otherwise be undertaken manually. Also, I think that automation in the manufacturing fields makes workers in such plants less efficient. For instance, an automated production process only requires an individual to sit in front of a screen and monitor the parameters such as pressure levels, temperatures, and opening valves at intervals. The challenge that remains is that the workers may not understand the operations if the automated machines stall. Since the workers are not exposed to handling the actual valves and pressure gauges, they may not have the capacity to think swiftly and save the situation. The increasing trends in plant accidents globally are a better manifest of automation increasing human dumbness. Carr continues with his agenda in discrediting the overreliance on technology with his arguably challenging articles. In Christianity, prayer is a way that a person can stay healthy physically, mentally and spiritually. Health is viewed by having a strong spiritual relationship with the Lord and living ones life by the word of God. Buddhist need a balance of health both mentally and physically in order to achieve optimal health. They way that they are able to restore health would be by practicing healthy dietary habits or meditation. Rastafarianism view on health as a balance of the mind, the body and the soul achieved with a more holistic approach like prayer and herbal treatments. Lastly, Islam reaches ultimate purity by having a clean body and soul. They must cleanse often and pray often. Religions differ in many ways; they could have a different sacred books, have different deities, or have different views on how to live a full life, ultimately they want the same thing, to have their faiths respected and incorporated into the care they are receiving. Introduction Throughout the world, there are thousands of distinctly different religious affiliations. In the United States alone, there are approximately 313 religions and denominations (All Religions and Denominations in the US, 2008). This paper will examine four diverse faiths Christianity, Buddhism, Rastafarianism and Islam. It will look at the philosophy of these four faiths when having care provided to them. It will specifically look at the spiritual perspective on healing. It will examine the critical components of healing for these faiths. Along with looking at these diverse faiths, this paper will look at what is important for people who are receiving care from health care providers whose views differ from their own. Christianity The Christians were the first people to start the worlds first voluntary charitable institutions which were hospitals (Trangelder, 2007). The reason that they started these hospitals is because they wanted to help the poor and those that were sick and dying (Trangelder, 2007). Health care and Christian belief go hand in hand. One of the most crucial components in healing is prayer. The Christians hold prayer in very high regard. They feel that prayer has the ability to make them better. In the book James 5:14-15(English Standard Version) it states, Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up(Biblegateway, 2001). Along with prayer, the bible mentions many ways that a person can stay healthy physically, mentally and spiritually. Ultimately, the way to stay healthy is by having a strong spiritual relationship with the Lord and living ones life by the word of God. Buddhism The Buddhist has a different holy book then the Christian faith. There sacred book is called Tripitaka. This holy book mentions that the only way to be truly healed is to be healthy in mind and body. Western medicine focuses on curing symptoms to treat medical problems, but the Buddhist see this only as a short term fix. In order for one to be healed one must also treat the spiritual aspect of the disease and its mind-based causes and remedies must be the primary considerations(Buddhism, Medicine, and Health, n. d. ). Buddhist feel that possible reasons for illness or disease would be 1) an imbalance of the four elements (earth, water, fire, and wind), 2) irregular dietary habits, 3) incorrect meditation methods, 4) disturbances by spirits, 5) demon possession, and 6) the force of bad karma (Buddhism, Medicine, and Health, n. d. ). They way that they are able to restore health would be by practicing healthy dietary habits, meditation, paying respect to the Buddha, repentance, reciting mantras, reciting the Buddhas name and using the dharma as medicine (Buddhism, Medicine, and Health, n. d. ). By doing this they would be able to find a balance physical and mentally and find long-term health. Rastafarianism Like the Christians, the Rastafarians sacred text that they pray to is the Bible, but the difference is how it is interpreted. The Rastafarians also feel that the head or God incarnate is Haile Selassie. He was a former Emperor of Ethiopia (Griffith, 2009). In Rastafarianism health care takes a holistic approach to healing; they believe that the concept of health extends to three spheres: the mind, the body and the soul (though sometimes the psychological and spiritual can sometimes be categorized together)(Rastafari and the Environment, 2012). They cure illnesses by use of home remedies or tonics rather than visiting a doctor. Rastafarians disown western influences of ideology, diet, lifestyle and religion in favor of belief systems and practices of African origin, which emphasizes the use of natural ingredients and tools(Rastafari and the Environment, 2012). Islam For the Islam, their sacred text is the Quran. In the Quran, unlike the Christians, Muhammad is the prophet sent to Earth to pass the word of the Lord, Allah. The Muslims feel that good health is one of the ways to get to heaven. In the Quran, it has teachings that show people how to protect his or her health and live life in a state of purity (Muslim Health Network (n. d). The single most important thing for this faith is prayer. Muslims perform it five times a day. The obligatory prayers provide a good means for the circulation of blood, breathing and general suppleness of joints (Muslim Health Network (n. d). Along with prayer they must cleanse after prayer, have a healthy diet, fast and refrain from intoxicates. Despite these religious differences in the United States, peoples only wish is to have their religious views respected and honored if possible. No matter if healthcare providers spiritual beliefs differ from those in their care, patients want their faith to be incorporated into the care that they are receiving. The Christian philosophy as written in the book of Luke 6:31 (English Standard Version) And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them(Biblegateway, n. d. ). This goes in line as all people would like to be treated, no matter how different spiritual views might be. In conclusion, the author learned that although many religions differ ultimately they want the same thing, to have their faith incorporated into the care they are receiving. Religions differ in many ways, they could have a different scared book, have different deities, or have different views on how to live a full life. Medication, chanting or prayer can help achieve inner peace to ultimately reach health inside and out. ? References Biblegateway (2001). James 5:14-15 ESV Is anyone among you sick? These novels transcend the ages, because they possess a greater meaning. Their stories teach people about life, the glory of the human soul, and all it can endure to overcome. Three novels in particular get to the very heart of feminine struggle. Though they touch not on womenââ¬â¢s struggle to vote, they reach the higher plain of womenââ¬â¢s struggle to be seen as who they are and not what society wants them to be. To Kill a Mockingbird, The Color Purple and The Bluest Eye all deal with the topic of women trying to overcome society. Although these novels were written in the mid to later half of the twentieth century, they go back to a time when the Great Depression was touching all walks of human life. Each of the main characters in these novels does not fit societyââ¬â¢s view of femininity during the time period. Although the main characters in the three stories do not fit societyââ¬â¢s idea of femininity, they each, in their own way, overcome this and show a greater beauty of strength. All three main characters in each of these stories fail to fulfill societyââ¬â¢s idea of beauty and femininity. The lead character of To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout, is a nine year old tomboy, during a time when girls arenââ¬â¢t supposed to be tomboys. She receives much criticism by her aunt and many others for not being the ideal young little girl. Harper Lee, the author, expresses through the view point of Scout, ââ¬Å"Aunt Alexandra was fanatical on the subject of my attire. I could not possibly hope to be a lady if I wore breeches, then I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasnââ¬â¢t supposed to be doing things that requi... ... is not willing to give up the fight by her amazing desire to want that child to live. Although the book does not show Claudia in adulthood, one can envision her as the epitome of a strong woman. These three main characters defy society because of their strength. These books become timeless because of the female characters. Each novel defies the expectations of society in its own way. They exemplify women who rise above the average to become greater than what most people are. The novels show the female spirit in all its glory; they portray its strengths and ability to overcome obstacles. Works Cited Lee, Harper. To Kill a Mockingbird. 1960. 40th Anniversary Ed. Mosquitoes are attracted by skin odors and the carbon dioxide in our breath. With our climate, it is easy for us Filipinos to get attracted by mosquitoes simply because we are sweating a lot. Because of mosquito bites, we can easily get diseases like West Nile Virus, the West Nile virus is contracted when a mosquito bites a human or animal. This virus can cause fever, headache, nausea, vomiting and rash in its early stages and can lead to paralysis. Dengue Fever, a contracted type of mosquito bite mainly during the day.Especially dangerous for children, dengue fever is found primarily in the tropics. It resembles viral flu and can be fatal. Malaria, also found primarily in tropical regions, mosquitoes carrying malaria bite during the night. Symptoms of this disease include fever, chills, headache, malaise and muscle ache. And Yellow Fever, Mostly found in South America and Africa, yellow f ever resembles the symptoms of other diseases carried by mosquitoes. In addition to these flu-like symptoms, yellow fever can also cause backache and jaundice and can be fatal. The menace posted by mosquito bites have surged so much that mosquito control measurements are almost crucial to keep ourselves from contracting serious illnesses like the malaria or the West Nile Virus. Mosquito control is more significant than ever before. Infected mosquitoes are the main culprit behind the spreading of these diseases and avoiding mosquito bites is the only successful way to remain unhurt. Some Mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus are often active at dawn and dusk, which makes them less likely to be noticed.Mosquito bites can produce allergic reactions. Itchy red bumps, for instance, are considered allergic reactions to the insect's saliva. More severe reactions include blisters, hives, bruises and intense inflammatory reactions. Our problem that we need to solve is the mosquitoes, beca use it carries the Dengue virus, which we Filipinos are aware of. As of this year, many people have died because of dengue. We want that we can help in our own way is to repel mosquito in our skin so we will not get hurt or get a bite from a mosquito. Statement of the ProblemOur main goal is to create a mosquito repellent that is eco-friendly, yet effective in repelling mosquitoes. Also, compete with the standards of the commercialized repellent. The researchers aim to answer these following questions: 1. Are the organic mosquito repellent sticks better than the commercialized repellents? 2. Is using lemongrass and catnip possible in making effective organic mosquito repellent sticks? 3. Which is more effective? Basing on the number of mosquitoes repelled and killed. (Catnip stick, lemongrass stick, or both combined. ) HypothesisThe organic mosquito repellent sticks can be a substitute to a commercialized repellent, because it is more eco-friendly and maybe less harmful to the body especially the lungs. The researchers think that it is possible to make organic mosquito repellent sticks using lemongrass and catnip, since those two agents are known to be effective ingredients in making mosquito repellents. The researchers believe that the coil with both agents is much more effective, because the effects of both agents combine is much better than just one of the catnip or lemongrass. Definition of Terms . Mosquito-repelling incense -Usually shaped into a stick, and typically made from a dried paste of pyrethrum powder. -In the study, this refers to the product that the researchers are trying to create. 2. Lemongrass -A fragrant tropical grass that yields oil that smells lemony. -This refers to the tall grass used in making the repellent sticks. 3. Catnip -A natural mosquito repellent. -One of the main ingredients of our mosquito repellent sticks. 4. Malaria -Caused by a parasite called Plasmodium, which is transmitted via the bites of infected mosquitoes. In this study, this is the disease that is common in poor countries caused by a parasite 5. Dengue Fever -A contracted type of mosquito bite mainly during the day. Especially dangerous for children, is found primarily in the tropics. -In the study, this is the virus that is widely spreading in the Philippines that we want to prevent. 6. Nepetalactone ââ¬â Ità is an organic compound first isolated from the plant catnip. -In the study, it is the main component of catnip that makes mosquitoes be repelled. Significance of the Study The significance of this study aims to help people prevent mosquitoes from staying in homes or schools. The researchers want to help people who get irritated by pesky mosquitoes. The researchers want to help certain people who encounter mosquitoes in their everyday life. 1. General Public a. The masses in general, since everyone needs to be protected from these insects for they are harmful to the body. 2. Campers b. These people like boy scouts and mountaineers like to stay outdoors, such as forests and mountainous areas, where there are a lot of mosquitoes. So the researchers want to help them repel mosquitoes on their camps. 3. Parents c.Parents want to prevent their children from getting bit by mosquitoes making them. Our organic mosquitoes repellent sticks will be a great help to these people 4. The Poor d. These people canââ¬â¢t afford to buy repellents for their homes. This will aid them, because it is easy to make and really affordable even to the poor. Scope and Limitation Our scope of the study is to make effective mosquito repellent sticks, to prevent mosquitoes from invading homes and other places. To lessen the risk of diseases caused by mosquitoes, such as Dengue Fever and Malaria. As a group we can only limit our organic repellent sticks to only prevent mosquitoes, but not to other insects. The researchers only aim to repel mosquitoes, but not to the extent that we would stop their existence. Chapter II Review of related l iterature Mosquito Coil Mosquito coil is mosquito-repelling incense, usually shaped into a spiral, and typically made from a dried paste of pyrethrum powder. The coil is usually held at the center of the spiral, suspending it in the air, or wedged by two pieces of fireproof nettings to allow continuous smoldering.Burning usually begins at the outer end of the spiral and progresses slowly toward the centre of the spiral, producing a mosquito-repellent smoke. A typical mosquito coil can measure around 15 cm in diameter and lasts up to 8 hours. Mosquito coils are widely used in Asia, Africa, and South America. Bad effects Burning mosquito coil (MC) releases various aromatic compounds like benzo pyrenes, benzo-fluoroethane and particulate matters. These chemicals have the potential to produce harmful effects on airways as demonstrated by histopathological changes in the airways of various animal models. It has been estimated that burning one MC over 8 hours produces particulate matter sm oke (as measured as PM2. 5) equivalent to around 100 cigarettes. Particulate matter pollution has been shown to increase airway hyper responsiveness and cause decrements in lung function. Mosquito The mosquitoes are a family of small, midge-like flies: the Culicidae. Although a few species are harmless or even useful to humanity, most are a nuisance because they consume blood from living vertebrates, including humans. The females of many species of mosquitoes are blood eating pests. In feeding on blood, some of them transmit extremely harmful human and livestock diseases, such as malaria. Some authorities argue accordingly that mosquitoes are the most dangerous animals on Earth. Eggs of some mosquitoes float on the water in rafts. Larvae, often called wigglers, have a soft body, a hard head and a breathing tube, or siphon, at the tip of the abdomen. Pupae are shaped like a comma, and are commonly called tumblers. Adults have delicate legs, a long proboscis and one pair of transparent wings Dengue Dengue fever, also known as break bone fever, is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus.Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash that is similar to measles. In a small proportion of cases the disease develops into the life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, resulting in bleeding, low levels of blood platelets and blood plasma leakage, or into dengue shock syndrome, where dangerously low blood pressure occurs. Dengue is transmitted by several species of mosquito within the genus Aedes, principally A. aegypti. The virus has four different types; infection with one type usually gives lifelong immunity to that type, but only short-term immunity to the others.Subsequent infection with a different type increases the risk of severe complications. As there is no commercially available vaccine, prevention is sought by reducing the habitat and the number of mosquitoes and limiting exposure to bites. Treatment of acute dengue is supportive, using either oral or intravenous rehydration for mild or moderate disease, and intravenous fluids and blood transfusion for more severe cases. The incidence of dengue fever has increased dramatically since the 1960s, with around 50ââ¬â100 million people infected yearly.Early descriptions of the condition date from 1779, and its viral cause and the transmission were elucidated in the early 20th century. Dengue has become a global problem since the Second World War and is endemic in more than 110 countries. Apart from eliminating the mosquitoes, work is ongoing on a vaccine, as well as medication targeted directly at the virus Catnip Catnip is a perennial herb and member of the Mint familyà Labiatae. It is native to Europe ; Asia, however has become naturalised in America ; Canada after being introduced. There are approximately 250 species of Catnip. The active ingredient which causes this is an essential oil called nepetalactone, which can be found in the leaves ; stem of the plant. Other constituents include Acetic Acid, Alpha and beta-nepetalactone, Citral, Nepetalactone, Geraniol, Dipentene, Citronellol, Nerol, Butyric Acid, Valeric Acid and Tannins. Catnip is also known by the following names:à à Cataria,à Catmint, Catnep, Catrup, Cat's Heal All,à Catââ¬â¢s-play, Cat's Wort, Catswort, Catwort, Chi Hsueh Tsao, Field Balm, Garden Nep, Herba Cataria, Herba Catti, Nebada, Nep.Lemongrass Lemongrass herb is a very popular plant found commonly in India and used for medicinal, food and mosquito and insect repellent products. The lemongrass oils are also used in cosmetics, soaps, perfumes, dyes and odorizes along with thousands of other products. There are many different and related types of lemongrass, all belonging to the grass family, Poaceae. East Indian and West Indian lemon grass are popular names for Cymbopogon flexuous and Cymbopogon citratus. Lemon grass is an evergreen, native to Southeast Asia, India, Myanma r, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Australia.Another type of lemongrass also used in insect repellents comes from Malaysia. The thin stems and foliage of lemon grass ranges from blue-green to gold, and the flowers are white, cream, or green. Lemongrass grows to around 8 feet in height in some cases with the majority of species tapering off at 4 feet. Lemon grass grows best in full sun and moist soil and cab be propagated by dividing the root clump into sections. Lemon grass leaves can be dried or frozen but require rehydration before use. Lemon grass is very mild, rating only a one on the hotness scale. It is mostly known as a common staple found in Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Indonesian, and Indian cooking. Lemon grass is used in curry, stir fry, soups, and marinades and it can be sauteed, mixed with soy sauce and spices, and used as a marinade. Lemongrass is particularly popular with seafood due to its distinctive lemony aroma and flavor. Effectiveness In a 2004 study presented at the Ca lifornia State Science Fair, a 25-percent lemon grass solution was tested against a commercial 15-percent Deet spray. The lemon grass brew was 51 percent effective in repelling mosquitoes, compared to an effectiveness of 81 percent for the Deet product. The study concluded that lemon grass showed promise as a partial replacement for Deet-based repellents. In a study conducted in 2010 at Maranatha Christian University, researchers compared lemon grass stem extract to citronella oil. Citronella oil proved more effective at repelling mosquitoes than the highest concentration of the lemon grass extract. Both studies reveal that while lemon grass does repel mosquitoes, it does not work as well as other products.Nepetalactone Nepetalactone is aà terpeneà composed of two isoprene units, with a total of ten carbons. Its chemical structure is similar to that of the valepotriates derived from the herb valerian, which is a mild central nervous system sedative (or stimulant to some persons). The molecular formula for nepetalactone is C10H14O2. The first fully characterized methylcyclopentane monoterpenoid. Isolated from the volatile oil of catnip produced byà Nepeta cataria Nepetalactone , its cas register number is 21651-62-7.It also can be called Nepetalactone cis-trans-form ; Cyclopenta(c)pyran-1(4aH)-one, 5,6,7,7a-tetrahydro-4,7-dimethyl-, (4aS,7S,7aR)- ; Cyclopenta(c)pyran-1(4aH)-one, 5,6,7,7a-tetrahydro-4,7-dimethyl-, (4aS-(4aalpha,7alpha,7aalpha))- . Ità is an organic compound first isolated from the plant catnip. Chapter III METHODOLOGY This chapter presents the projectââ¬â¢s research design, list of materials and their quantities needed for the research, and the laboratory procedures which are the pre-lab procedure, laboratory proper, and post laboratory. Research Design This study made use of an experimental research design. The experimental and control groups were used in this study. This design is illustrated as follows. Table 3. 1 Set-up| Location| Product Used| Quantity of Mosquitoes| Set-up A| Enclosed room| Catnip Incense Stick| 10 mosquitoes| Set-up B| Enclosed room| Lemongrass Incense Stick| 10 mosquitoes| Set-up C| Enclosed room| Catnip and Lemongrass Incense Stick| 10 mosquitoes| Set-up D| Enclosed room| CommercializedIncense Stick| 10 mosquitoes| Subject of the Study -The researchers used mosquitoes as the subject to the experiment. Ten mosquitoes in each container, with a total of forty mosquitoes (Caught with the mosquito trap).Materials Needed: One (1) ââ¬â Masher Four (4) ââ¬â Mosquito traps Three (3) ââ¬â Incense holders Ten (10) ââ¬â Incense sticks Two (2) ââ¬â Catnip Two (2) ââ¬â Lemon Grass Four (4) ââ¬â Containers of Mosquitoes One (1) ââ¬â Commercialized repellent Pre-Lab Procedures: Catnip and Lemon Grass were collected by the researchers. The researchers pulverize the Catnip and Lemon Grass to extract the juices from them. The researchers then put the extracted juices into 3 containers. First with only the catnip, Second with only the lemon grass, lastly with both catnip and lemon grass in the container. Laboratory Proper Procedures:The researchers applied the juices of catnip to three incense sticks and was labeled Set-up A, lemongrass extract juice to the other three incense sticks and labeled Set-up B, and both the lemon grass extract and catnip extract juices to the remaining incense sticks and labeled Set-up C. The commercialized repellent was labeled Set-up D. The researchers applied the extract juices thoroughly by hand or by cotton swabs. The researchers then let the incense sticks rest for about 6 to 10 minutes, to let the extract juices be absorbed by the incense sticks. Post Laboratory Procedures:The researchers put the incense sticks in their respective incense holders in order. The researchers then put sample #1 in an enclosed room beside the mosquito trap. The researchers then lit up the incense sticks and released the first batch of mosqu itoes. The researchers closely observe the experiment. The researchers then waited for the incense sticks to disintegrate (15 to 20 minutes). Then the researchers do the same with the sample #2, sample #3, and to the commercialized repellent. The researchers recorded the results based on how many mosquitoes were repelled and killed.Chapter IV Presentation, Interpretation and Analysis of Data This chapter shows the presentation, interpretation and analysis of data gathered after a thorough investigation. Table 4. 1 Mosquitoes that were effectively repelled Experimental| Quantity(number of sticks)| Mosquitoes Repelled| Time Element (minutes)| Catnip| 3| 4 out of 10| 20| Lemongrass| 3| 3 out of 10| 20| Both Combined| 3| 5 out of 10| 20| The table above shows that the Incense stick with the Catnip effectively repelled 4 mosquitoes and the Incense stick with the Lemongrass only killed 3 out of 10 mosquitoes. On the other hand, the Incense stick with the Catnip and the Lemongrass combined showed the best results in this test. This shows that the Catnip and Lemongrass combined will yield better results than the Catnip and Lemon grass alone but the results of this test were unsatisfactory because only half of the mosquitoes tested were repelled effectively. Table 4. 2 Mosquitoes that were effectively killed Experimental| Quantity(number of sticks)| Mosquitoes Repelled| Time Element (minutes)| Catnip| 3| 1 out of 9| 20| Lemon Grass| 3| 1 out of 9| 20|Both Combined| 3| 3 out of 9| 20| The table shows that Catnip and Lemongrass killed only 1 out of 9 mosquitoes but when combined the product repels 3 out of 9 mosquitoes, this proves that the organic incense stick will yield better results if both Catnip and Lemongrass combined, rather than the Catnip and Lemongrass alone because it only kills 1 out of 9 mosquitoes as shown on the table. Table 4. 3 Mosquitoes that are killed by the commercialized product Experimental| Quantity(number of coils)| Mosquitoes Repelled| Time Ele ment (minutes)| Baygon| 1| 9 out of 10| 20|This table shows that the Baygon coil effectively killed 9 out of 10 mosquitoes. This proves that our incense stick with Lemongrass, Catnip or both canââ¬â¢t compete with a better, well known commercialized product like that of the Baygon. Baygon uses stronger chemicals unlike that of our incense stick, which uses organic plants. Chapter 5 Summary, Conclusion, and Recommendations Summary: The researchers made a mosquito coil that is organic and eco-friendly. The researchers also studied between a commercialized mosquito coil with their own mosquito repellent. The researchers also made mosquito traps for trapping mosquitoes for the researchers experiment. Their product is effective and it produced some positive results. The catnip and lemongrass combined shows the best results, based on how much mosquitoes it repelled and killed, throughout the experiment. Conclusions: Throughout the experiment, the researchers found out that the commercia lized mosquito coil is more effective than our organic mosquito repellent. The researchers found out that it is possible to make a mosquito coil using catnip and lemongrass because the two agents are an effective mosquito repellent.Out of the three mosquito coils we had made, the catnip and lemongrass combined showed the best results basing on our experiment. Recommendations: The researchers recommend the people to use natural and safe mosquito coils that can be home made. The researchers also recommend using stronger plants to use in making mosquito coil. The researchers also recommend adding scented aroma to the coils/sticks so it can be a pleasing feeling for the people who will use it. The researchers also recommend using both Catnip and Lemon Grass for making a mosquito coil because it is effective.References: From Internet: Brian, Dan. One of the first strategies Hyundai should consider is the development of luxury vehicles which could then be heavily marketed toward the upper and middle class cultural societies in United States, China, Japan, Europe, etc. While Hyundai has come a long way since it first began, the automobile manufacturer has a long path of growth and expansion to meet the consumer recognition of the competition. There are both pros and cons of this type of strategic plan. The greatest advantage presents Hyundai the opportunity to turn into a top contender amongst Toyota, Nissan, Lexus, and other well established and highly appreciated car companies. To further embellish upon the benefits, Hyundai stands to substantially increase the profit margins for each vehicle as well as overall revenues. The major disadvantages detail the cost factor of production in the current economic down turn and difficulties entering into the luxury vehicle trade. A second option which should be considered involves the investment and expansion into countries where Hyundai holds little to no presence or existence, Hyundais commitment to diversity and inclusion is an important reason for our success as one of the fastest growing automotive companies in the world. â⬠(Diveristy In Action, 2010) Developing these markets affords the company the prospect of creating a promising name for itself within rising commerce as well as building solid customer relationships and loyalties. With the good comes the bad, the shortcomings include but are not limited to very strong competition, limited and reduced request for luxury vehicles, and again the pricy cost factors in a sluggish economy. The latest trend of car companies is, ââ¬Å"going greenâ⬠, cars which have significantly reduced the consumption of oil or otherwise known as the hybrid automobile. This is the third alternative Hyundai must continue to research and develop automobiles that will leave less of a foot on planet earth , ââ¬Å"Over the next few years, Hyundai will introduce hybrids and other high-efficiency, low-emission models that cost far less than youââ¬â¢d expect. (Eco-Friendly Finally Got Econ-Friendly, 2010) Today, more automobile manufacturers and government incentives entice shoppers to purchase hybrid or electrical vehicles. The government in addition to car companies is beginning to strictly regulate emission policies and rules. Optimistic reactions and reviews of these new vehicles are ever growing and provide sound reasoning to explore such an endeavor. Once more, there are cons which consist of the huge expense of examining and developing electrical and hybrid vehicles and the vast competition of other automobile makers. The recommended strategy of choice embraces the most sensible act of ongoing research and the continuation of expansion through the development of hybrid or electric vehicles. Luxury vehicles offer the opportunity of steady increase in profits in the long run, but with the current economic conditions, and slow recovery, and consumers reevaluating the importance of financial security, this alternative should not be the preferred. Most customers want to save money as well as the environment, the hybrid and electric car provide both, the efficiency of smaller and green cars are in high demand. With budgets tight, gas prices in flux and fuel economy on everyoneââ¬â¢s mind, itââ¬â¢s more important than ever to possess the latest information on fuel-efficient vehicles and energy-saving technologies. â⬠(About Automotive Fuel Efficiency, 2010) Implementation Bringing into play the recommended choice of the third option, the growth and expansion of hybrid and electrical vehicles must be conducted within a series of phases rather than leap and jump without careful consideration and thorough processes. The first stage instigates the enhancement and amplification of fuel efficient small automobiles which are affordable in all aspects, cost, fuel, and maintenance. The subsequent dictates a quick response and course of action regarding the investigation and advancement of the hybrid vehicle. Hyundai must move at the right pace, a slow cultivation would result in a negative outcome. Finally the company should work at a steady momentum and quicken the rate of maturity in reference to the electric automobile. It would be wise to remain on constant track or ahead of the competition. Obama also instructed the Transportation Department to draw up new interim targets for mileage standards starting in 2012 that ensure new vehicles reach the 35 mile-a-gallon level set by Congress for 2020. He left intact Bush administration guidelines for 2011 models already being designed. â⬠(Mufson Eilperin, 2009) More than one (three or four) research and development managers ought to be responsible for the augmentation of small fuel efficient vehicles, making available research, design, and marketing capabilities. A schedule should be set forth and stringently encouraged, one year to be the time period allotted. Three to four months would reflect the initial one or two vehicles with the completion of six to seven at the end of one year. Hybrid car deliveries references a bit longer, the time frame of two years should be adequate for the introduction of six to seven automobiles with one or two preliminary vehicles within the first six months. The commencement of electric vehicles should as take one year, the trial automobile prepared in six months. A financial plan must be observed in an effort to maintain a good profit level. The improvements and further growth of small fuel efficient vehicles possess a budget of sixty million, hybrid vehicles three billion, and electric cars eight billion. Evaluation and Control Measuring productivity is a tedious but necessary function of a managerââ¬â¢s responsibility, failure to control the yield and efficiency will ultimately have harmful consequences on the firm, and revenues. Each vehicle type, small fuel efficient, hybrid, and electric vehicles as explained previously will have a time period to fulfill and accomplish required task. As an example the addition and betterment of the small fuel efficient automobile directs the completion of four assignments during the first month, three during the second, and lastly but not least five throughout the fifth. With each monthly task finalizations, an analysis to evaluate the realization of completed task against what is expected will counteract unproductive and unsuccessful means of use and operations and uphold projected calculations and support, preserve, and control schedules for each vehicle debut. Research and development managers as well will be evaluated during the sixth month of production on decisive factors and criterion. To effectively and impartially assess and appraise the true performance of the research and development managerââ¬â¢s, upper level staff members such at the Vice President and executive manager overseeing the venture should determine measurable standards. A sampling of considerations and points of review could incorporate the following: ? Vehicle design and fabrication ?Vehicle efficiency: fuel savings and miles per gallon Vehicle charisma and magnetism ?Vehicle performance: Highest speed and horsepower ?Employee performance, turnover, and aptness of developmental stages Control and organization is vital, at all times management must retain timeliness and effectual operations to meet the necessary timetable of each vehicles launching. Just as with the evaluation process, the administration of control will grant opportunities of correction. The review and study of control takes upon the same aspects of evaluation, real numbers verses intended. All children display differences from one another in terms of their physical characteristics and learning disabilities. The differences among most children are quite minor, allowing them to benefit from the general education program. Heward (2014) stated that the physical characteristics and/or learning characteristics of exceptional children differ from the norm, either above or below, to such an extent that they require an individualized program of special education and related services to get full value from education. The first principle of IDEA is Zero Reject which means that schools must educate all children with disabilities. No child with a disability may be left out from a free appropriate education regardless of the nature or severity of the disability (Heward, 2014). The second principle is called Nondiscriminatory Evaluation which must use unbiased, multifactor methods of evaluation to determine whether a child has a disability and, if so, whether the child needs specially designed instruction to benefit from education (Heward, 2014). Testing and evaluation procedures must not discriminate on the basis of race, culture, or native language. All tests must be administered in the childââ¬â¢s native language, and identification and placement decisions cannot be made on the basis of a single test score. These provisions of IDEA are known as a protection in evaluation procedures (Heward, 2014). Answer: Introduction The digital innovation is transforming the society globally. The digital era has immense power to change the society on a large scale. Digital innovation is governing our lives in homes, industry, business and society and is changing every aspect of our lives. The internet is the first wave in the digital technology transforming lives of every individual and after the innovation of smart phones and devices the internet use is accessible to everyone. By 2020, the use of digital technology would exceed 50 million. The digitalized machinery, computers and embedded sensors has revolutionized the industry, business and society as a whole. The mobile applications, cloud based devices, big data and artificial intelligence has provided enormous services to people on an unprecedented scale. The people, information and a connected structure are the key elements that drive digital transformation globally. Greengard and Samuel in their book how internet changes everything explained how internet has directed our lives in every possible way. As we get up, we check our smart phone for messages and emails. The wrist sleep bands monitor our sleep patterns during night. The fit bit scale helps to weigh our body weight, body fat, food and water intake and other activity levels. The fitness app helps to provide the nutritional data and calorie intake (Greengard and Samuel 2015). They also explained how the phone apps provide information regarding geographic location, watch movies through wireless internet network, and read electronic books on mobiles. Apart from mobile phones and computers, there are a number of devices that are connected to wireless internet that are used on daily basis like health monitors, thermostats, fitness devices, environmental sensors, supermarket shelves and even livestock. Concisely, the activities we perform on a daily basis are greatly dependent on technology and have great impact on us. The book by Greengard and Samuel also explained how the society has changed in the last few decades. Before the digitization, the data and information existed in the form of hrad drives and gigantic frameworks stored in computers. The local area network and floppy disks were used to transfer data from one device to another. The data transfer via floppy disks was slow and had limited capabilities. The transportation of data through magnetic media was challenging for people as they had to carry disks from one place to another. This led to wastage of time as the transferring of data would take days or months. The first internet connections started with the dialing of the modems and web browsing through Mosaic. In 1990, the first web browser called Nexus came into existence. The connections were slow and the user could access only while connected through America Online and other portals. Robert E Kahn and Vint Cerf invented the internet and showed that world is connected through an interconnected network via internet. The introduction of mobile phones and high speed broadband helped people to conne4cts not only their mobile phones but also other electronic gadgets including door locks, washing machines, vehicles, tablets and even refrigerators. The book explained how the traditional DVD players, conventional camera, landline phones and paper maps are being replaced by mobile applications and tablet devices encompassing every activity on fingertips. The medical equipments, industrial machines and agricultural equipments are being connected to the internet transferring data and storing them in databases. Meyer, Eric T., and Ralph Schroeder 2015 explained how internet has transformed the concept of knowledge. The concept of e-research through digital tools and data has helped the researchers and students in their research by introducing the knowledge machines online that has transformed the concept of research. The research on any topic is possible now by the help of search engine Google providing a wide range of information on various topics available online. This explains the scenario when the writer was a kid. The skill did not lie in finding the information rather it focuses on the processing, analysis, combination and computation of the information and data. The access to Wikipedia, online available journals, peer reviewed journals helps to find answers to any question in minutes. The book explained not only the way how the knowledge is acquired but also the configuration and generation of the data. The knowledge machines are the instruments for manipulation of data and its use i n the research advancement. Meyer, Eric T., and Ralph Schroeder 2015 focused on the defining the e-research, generating the new knowledge by the university researchers. They have explained the overview and broader aspects of the five forms of internet research. The first form is the internet as a social phenomenon. The social aspects include a person in communication and connecting to people, learning, playing and interacting via internet. The second aspect is the internet as information source by students and research scholars. The use of Wikipedia, research articles, student projects, e-library and literature search shows how the internet acts as a source of information. The third aspect is the internet use as a research tool or method. The online survey research, virtual ethnography and web metrics and other handbooks provide online research options. The fourth aspect is the research regarding engineering and computer science and study of underlying technologies that defines the internet functioning. Many ef forts are being made in this regard and research is going on to keep the internet software processing. The e-research is used to define the use of digital tools and data to produce knowledge. It is the creation of new knowledge through scientific, social and humanities knowledge. The book explained how the face of research changes with the networked technologies as compared to academic knowledge. Concisely, the book explained that how e-research is helpful in generating new knowledge from the databases and research journals and it has changed the face of configuration of data. Technology has not only transformed an individual and education arena but also the sales and marketing industry. Nourbakhsh 2013 explained that how the digitization has transformed the marketing and sales industry scaling heights. The companies are successful in alluring customers through online shopping and make them bind to the social networks, values and virtual products. People spend thousands for virtual weapons and robotic products. The book explained how the companies could track whatever the customers does and they could measure and discern loyalty of the customers. The companies are addicted to the digital world and they could receive information and have total control over it. The internet tracks the human behavior, websites gathering information about their visitors, their way of navigation and how they react. The companies profit by keeping a track of what their customers frequently visit, which browser they use and what kind of computer models they use. The development of strong tools like data mining helps in storing big data regarding online behavior of the people. The analytics company can generalize the experimentation of their shoppers online. The face interpretation could track which way and what people are looking at. The digitalization has the ability to observe a person via computer vision systems all the time. The New Mediocracy unleashes the robotic future and judgment of human behavior taking the shape of new interactive media. Drori 2010 explained in his book how information and communication technology is a marker for human development. The world is taking the shape of e-economy, e-governement and e-empowerment. Drori addressed the global inequality in the access and use of technology called digital divide and innovation divide that describes the technology gap in creation and ownership in intellectual property. The technology use access issues and rights of person to technology. The global innovation divides and differentiates among the countries that are operating globally. The innovators benefit from the creation of novel technol ogies and the non-inventors are dependent on the rights to purchase and use of any such technology. The e-economy is scaling heights through information and communication technology. Despite of the innovation of technology and digital tools, there is a wide gap in the global innovation. Schnapp and Battles 2014 explained that how books emerged as e-books and it has changed the face of education. Readers go through the lines analyzing and keeping a track of what they have studied. Now a days books are measured in bytes and in pixels. The digital documents being flexible stacked in the form of lists, icons, and blocks and in two or three dimensional arrays. The digital bookshelf comprising of e-books and digital records stores complex data. The scanners, recorders and copiers are accessible and within the reach of common man. The librarian keeps a record of books being a guard and keeper of books. The concept of digital library has made the librarian profession seems less. The library cards are now designed as smart biometric identification forms storing information of the readers entire research history, payments, operability across the institutions and use of special services. The social network and media the references are self driven and user centered. The book The Peoples Platform by Taylor Astra explained how internet has become a revolution in every field. The industry is digitalized engaging people into online shopping and rapidly expanding their infrastructure. The researchers and students are transforming via internet in the way they search and investigate the problems. The classrooms have become smart through digitalization and store information in the form of e-library. The online world has increased greater communication among the people being connected together being distant from each other. The book shows a new perspective of the digital tools being used by people in a creative or destructive manner. The broadband access could help any person to become a journalist by starting a blog, sharing photos and keeping accountable of the politicians. Taylor in her article summarized the use of internet transforming consumers into producers and placing customers at par with the power. The main strength of the book lays in her ref usal critique the new system. The online piracy and live streaming has reduced the revenue of the music world. The technologies like Bit Torrent have made easy access to the downloading of movies hampering the world of filmmaking. Taylor expanded her views into the education, politics and the labor market showing how technology is surpassed into the hands of the large entities and individuals having less power. Concisely, internet is a revolution changing every aspects of life from a n individual to the society as a whole. In the above mentioned books, the authors explained how technology has transformed an individual and in various aspects of society like the industry, education, trade and marketing industry. Going beyond these sectors, the digital technology has transformed the telecommunication, healthcare, banking and media industry. The productivity and gross revenue has increased over the recent years in the telecommunication industry. The online generated phone bills, automated online directories, voice recognition systems has helped the customers to get hassle free services and has significantly reduced the work force in providing the telecommunication services. The online billing can keep a record of calls, internet use, call rates and duration that would enable to retrieve the information at the time of need. The digitized communication through broadband services via optical cable accommodates better more capacity and increased traffic. The automatic identification enables to identify the cal ler and trace ones history. The video calling is also useful for people to stay connected being distant from each other and also helpful to students to attend classes being conducted at some other place. The use of barcodes, microchips are useful to provide security to people and store information regarding a product and its inventory data. The Radio frequency identification is very useful in tightening human security at homes and workplaces. A control reader detects the signal provided by the chip and recognizes the person allowing entering the door. The video conferencing, interviews through Skype and tools enabling instant messaging helped in simplifying the complex business processes enhancing the productivity and economy to a great extent. The digital technology has been incorporated in the school curriculum in the form of computer classes and technological subjects to help them in their further studies that are technology driven. The introduction of smart classes helped the students to know the world in a better way and make things accessible to them in an easy and better way. The notes are available in the form of soft copies helpful for the students to access from anywhere without missing any important point that are a major disadvantage in handwritten notes. Technology has also helped the kids those have not started their school life yet. The use of technology by parents in the form of online video classes and games helps them to get ready for their school life and give them a head start for their upcoming life. The online databases, webpages and discussion rooms help the students to gain knowledge on a wider aspect. Digital technology is posing a positive effect on the healthcare system. It has helped mankind in many ways. The medical and professional skills in collaboration with use of digital technology has enhanced over the years in providing better services to the people and in saving millions of life. The embedded computing and microelectronics used in diagnostic methods like computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, sphygmomanometer and digital thermometers are essential for diagnosis (Bardhan, Indranil and Thouin 2013). The best clinical practice is performed by using digitalized diagnostic tools that are overpowering the manual databases for keeping patients records and are useful in saving time in case of emergency patients. The use of bar coded wristbands for patient identification is also helpful in providing accurate treatment and giving them the individual care. These bar coded wristbands helps to monitor the movements of the patients within the hospital premises. The wid e use of video and remote access in hospitals is helping the physicians to keep a check on the patients status and improvement. The teleconferencing among the doctors and information technology based remotes helps them to consult specialists all over the world and seek better assistance. The banking sector is a major part of our economy and through innovative digitalization; it is enhancing the revenue and economy of a country. The internet surfing and use of search engines has reduced the imagination power, the way they think and deep thought analysis about any material in people. The digitization has reduced the physical activity of the people and posing them to lead a sedentary lifestyle. The technology use by people has made people live in isolation and in a fictional world and there is no physical meeting between the people. People waste time in internet surfing, there is loss of concentration and productivity, continuous use of gadgets an d earphones would make them consume unhealthy foods, hamper eyesight and hearing, lack of privacy due to social networking sites. The addiction to gadgets makes poor sleep patterns affecting health and other related problems. Therefore, it can be concluded that digitization has made the life easy for the people and the society as a whole in every sector still it has some negative impacts that varies with the extent of application and actions of the people. Just as a tour guide canââ¬â¢t make you enjoy the time you spend wandering around the scenery, a teacher, despite their title, canââ¬â¢t be the force that is responsible for the studentââ¬â¢s learning. However, like a good tour guide, a teacher can make it a lot nicer than it would be otherwise. A teacherââ¬â¢s job is to guide the student as best they can down the path of knowledge and it is the studentââ¬â¢s job to follow as best they can. All other aspects of their relationship as teacher and student stem from this. The most important trait for a teacher to posses is the ability to adapt to their studentââ¬â¢s needs. If a teacher will works off a fixed schedule and never makes any changes, they will not be able to instruct the student as well as they would otherwise. They need to spend the right amount of time explaining each thing; otherwise it is demeaning to the relationship. In an ideal relationship, both teacher and student need to be gaining as much as possible at all times. Obviously knowledge is the most important thing to be gained but along with that there needs to be a level of satisfaction or accomplishment along with enjoyment. Someone can work like crazy and complete more than everyone else combined but unless they feel that they have truly accomplished something the task has no meaning simply because they will have done nothing in their minds. This stems into enjoyment because if you feel like youââ¬â¢re doing nothing you will become bored and being bored with something is only counterproductive while doing it. Whenever I become bored with something, I stop paying attention to it and start doing something else. If you start doing something else while being taught then you will not learn during that time. It is therefore essential for some form of enjoyment to be present otherwise nothing can be gained. The last requirement for an ideal teacher student relationship is that both are ready and willing to commit themselves to either their instructing or learning. Now this applies mainly to the student who is for the most part required to be there and less to the teacher who chooses to be there. The imbalance comes from the simple logic that the teacher is almost automatically committed because why else would they be a teacher in the first place? There are plenty of other professions out there. On the other hand a student is more obligated to be their instead of choosing to be their and thus has a much higher chance of not being committed than the teacher. If for some reason either of the two are not committed to the task then the endeavor will be a complete waste. If the student does not want to learn then they will not learn. The teacher cannot physically force the student to learn, just as our tour guide, cannot make someone love a piece of scenery if they have already decided that it is stupid and that they want to go home. Similarly it is impossible to force someone to do a better job as a guide. And so, the only way an ideal relationship can form is if teacher and student are both committed to their tasks. reconnebarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03062518187879694319noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7093953551762255669.post-28533086715524538962019-11-28T01:05:00.001-08:002019-11-28T01:05:06.381-08:00Troubles With My Friend Essay Example For Students Troubles With My Friend Essay I was walking straight to my apartment. Steph had a great job as a secretary that allowed her to pay half of the bills in order for us to have everything under control. She was a great help inside the house. Her room was always organized and she would help me with the domestic duties. In that moment I couldnââ¬â¢t think of anyone else that could do it better than her. I also added pictures of steph and her mom. Her emotions start it to appear and I could see tears running down her eyes. At the end of the movie it was a short clip of me explaining how much I loved her and how much I had struggled because of her attitude. I even added pictures of the unpaid bills, the dirtiness of our apartment, and the bags under my eyes as the effects of her random parties. As soon as the movie ended she hugged me so hard and cried. .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b , .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b .postImageUrl , .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b , .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b:hover , .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b:visited , .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b:active { border:0!important; } .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b:active , .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u848bec1452cf4ca29f75bcf562f4265b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Pearl Harbor EssayI didnââ¬â¢t even know what to say, I was hoping she could understand me. It was considered necessary to maintain good relations with our alliance partners the United) and constituted a critical step in maintaining a defense. Initially, Australia provided financial support to the Republic of Vietnam (RVN), and when widespread conflict became more widespread, Australia provided military advisers. The United States, who had been keen "observers" of the conflict, soon committed itself to military intervention and Australia wished to show her support. The problem was, that the South Vietnamese government was not so convinced of the utility of Australia's presence. How was Australia to solve this dilemma? The official and propagated account of Australia's decision to enter the Vietnam War holds that Australia, at the behest of the South Vietnamese government, and together with the noble American nation entered (reluctantly) into war, to safeguard the world from communist peril. Vietnam constituted Australia's longest involvement in a war, and the first confrontation in which involvement was not always viewed as a simple logical process. The Australian troop force in Vietnam build up steadily in the years 1965-1967. Even before this Australia deployed military advisers, and sent aid to the South Vietnamese government. The actual Australian contingent was minor in comparison to force sizes of other allied countries. Additionally it was predominantly located in an area which was perceived as being of critical strategic importance for the overall war. Australia's presence was concentrated around a small area of Vietnam, Phuoc Tuy province. Here, the majority of Australian regular and national service troops were located, together with New Zealand troops, thus forming the integrated ANZAC force. This study particularly focuses on kidââ¬â¢s consumption of snacks. To get conclusive results, the authors designed questionnaires meant to analyze obesity risk factors like eating motivations, snack intake, as well as, body dissatisfaction (Brown & Ogden, 2004). Participating parents were also required to fill in questionnaires with additional aspects relating to the effort they make in regulating their childrenââ¬â¢s feeding behavior. Another aspect studied during the study, was the parentsââ¬â¢ tendency to use food as an instrument for kidsââ¬â¢ behavior regulation. The study results indicated that there is a significant connection betw een parents and children, in consideration of snack consumption, feeding motivations and, hence childhood obesity. This article, therefore, places emphasis on the imperative role of modelling that parents should play. All the same, results from the study indicate that negative parental influence is not the sole determinant of obesity, since it must be coupled with other factors like sedentary child lifestyles, lack of exercise and excessive consumption of junk food among other things. The study findings also indicate that a constructive parental model is more effective in facilitating transformation and regulation of obesity, than parentsââ¬â¢ attempts to compel children to reduce their food intake (Brown & Ogden, 2004). This weekââ¬â¢s readings demonstrate that the dynamics of todayââ¬â¢s recession have been fundamentally a part of American politics for almost a century. Though all three documents show some degree of recognition that the previous function of the American economy had become untenable, and that some new actions must take place to protect the poor and those with less control over their economic destiny, they also show a repeating, recognizable pattern that has continued to this day ââ¬â a left which elected a president on the hopes of broadly redistributing wealth, a president that had to back off of his initial promise for pragmatic reasons and thus anger his own con stituents, and a right outraged by the entire process, glumly acknowledging that perhaps a social safety net was necessary, but calling any real redistribution of wealth socialism and anti-American. One of the most remarkable things upon reading these three texts is the fact that Roosevelt, even while still simply campaigning for president rather than actually being president, seemed very conscious of his place in history, and of the requirements of pragmatism that holding the presidency would entail. Instead of opening his speech with the kind of emotional call to action that can be so common in election year campaigning, Roosevelt opens with a somewhat dry recitation of presidential history, invoking Jeffersonââ¬â¢s famous duel with Maddison over the role of the government (165). So even before becoming president, Roosevelt was conscious of the way history might view him and his actions, and was conscious of the pragmatic demands of his office. This led to his criticism of the financial system, reconnebarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03062518187879694319noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7093953551762255669.post-41893223848965981552019-11-15T11:08:00.001-08:002019-11-15T11:08:07.213-08:00Analysing The Role Of Women In Social Care Social Work EssayAnalysing The Role Of Women In Social Care Social Work Essay It could be argued, that work within the social care profession is predominantly women-centred due to the fact it is mainly a female profession. However, research shows that this may not be the case. Although the majority of staff is indeed women, men, however, make up the majority of senior management roles (Dominelli, 2004). This inevitability produces a situation whereby, the decisions regarding policy are made mainly by men for women. The focus of this study is to critically examine the fact that although women overwhelmingly undertake the majority of the caring roles within the social care profession, these organisations remain firmly under patriarchal power. This essay will consider the role of women as professionals, carers and managers within social care organisations. It will examine traditional theories of management, the challenges faced by women who become professionals and managers and strategies appropriate for the effective delivery of care. To conclude it will consider whether there is indeed a role for female managers within an environment dominated by men. Social work can be seen as originating from industrialisation in the nineteenth century and the Charity Organisation Societies of Great Britain and America (Payne, 2005). Dominelli (2004) argues these organisations promoted friendly visiting and prevented disorganised charitable giving. This organised way of working was the first step to establishing social work as a discrete area of activity and as a profession (Adams, 2003). Professional relationships inside hospitals reflected the Victorian patriarchal family ideal, where female nurses were perceived as mothers and carers and male doctors as fathers (Deacon, 2002). These stereotyped ideas eventually characterised the power relations within other bureaucratic structures (Payne, 2000). Professionalism was viewed as a practice based on a long training period, a degree of autonomy, with membership to a group. This particular degree of social distance characterised professions as enjoying high status and autonomy (Payne, 2005). Nurses and social workers were consigned to the category of semi-professional, on account of their perceived limitations of their training, knowledge base and autonomy (Nazarko, 2004). The claim that nursing and social work lacked the basis of technical or abstract knowledge, that domestic skills and interpersonal skills were more suited, could be argued, reinforced the discourses of semi-professionalism (Banks, 2001). In addition, work based in state welfare bureaucratises, such as those of social work and nursing, did no commenstrate with the traditional idea of professionalism (Payne, 2005). Thompson (2002) supports this argument stating social workers and remedial therapy occupations were often viewed as semi-professionals as they did not fulfil all the attributes within the trait approach (Thompson, 2002). Sharkey (2000) takes this further, critical of implications of the associations of women with the caring role, stating that it represents a social construction and is division of power exerted over women by men. In the same way sexism is constructed, it must be viewed that other marginalised groups, such as black, disabled groups are subject to the same issues of power imbalance (Dominelli, 2004). To counter this imbalance and provide professionalism with a career structure and job security, most professionals in health and social care work in large formal organisation (Moonie, 2004). Traditional concepts of professionalism has changed as professionals are employed in either a clinical or an expert role to perform certain, clearly defined, tasks or be involved in service management (Bradshaw, 2004) Miller (2004) argues that professionals attempt to seek to reclaim professionalism by seeking power over territory by defining an area of expertise which is theirs alone. Thompson (2002) believes by the seeking of power through a claim of expertise, may actually disadvantage the very people whom professionals aim to help. In attempt to counter imbalance of power, professionals possess specific codes of conduct and ethics (Banks, 2001). Scott (2001) argues this is necessary, that professionalism implies not just expertise, but moral responsibility. For the social worker, their moral philosophy is embedded within a specific professional Code of Practice (Adams, 2003). Rather than self regulating groups with claims of moral conduct, it may be that professionals are operating obstructive practices (Banks, 2001). With the emergence of consumerism and the subsequent contract culture, there has been an increase in the administrative approach and the growth of procedures and one could argue, will undermine their pledge for moral responsibility (Adams, 2002). Dominelli (2002) suggests social workers are increasingly having to meet the demands of government performance strategies, the cloak of specialist knowledge could be interpreted merely as a disguise to win resource battles, or to exercise group power politics (Adams et al, 2009). It could be argued that this is inevitably a result of a globalising world economy, a New Right philosophy of value for money and a demand that people look after themselves (Means et al, 2003). Furthermore, within the current political climate, professionals have to be committed to providing seamless, client led services, with a greater demand for accountability for the public resources expended in service provision (Brechin et al, 2000). According to Butcher (2006) many professionals may find problems arise within the agency context. They may find there is dichotomy of interest with their role as a professional and the role and responsibility within the organisation (Butcher, 2006). In the first instance, the interest of their client may be paramount, however, acting as gatekeepers they manage the planning and distribution of services (Bauld et al, 20004). The NHS and Community Care Act 1990 implies professionals share power, however, acting as gatekeeper may only mean power and control will still remain with the state (Sharkey, 2000). To counter oppressive practices alongside organisational constraints, professionals can work in a number of anti-oppressive ways (Tibbs, 2001). Social workers can look at particular ways of thinking that will counter the oppressive elements of a professional status. For example, social workers working from an anti-sexist or anti-racist way. Professionals can utilise legislation and agency policy and use them as tools to effectively bring about change and combat oppression (Killick, 2001). . The government policy of caring in the community could be said to further reinforce oppression, whereby, informal care is reliant on the goodwill of women to undertake the free caring role of a relative or to undertake low paid work within social care (Bradshaw, 2004). By contrast, following the natural assumption that men should be in paid work, if men do undertake the caring of a relative or friend, they often considered incapable of undertaking domestic work so are usually offered more help and support than a woman in a similar situation (Scott, 2001). To counter this imbalance and provide professionalism with a career structure and job security, most professionals in health and social services work in large formal organisation (Alcock, 2000) The majority of roles advertised by social services usually refer to caring such as social care, community care and residential care. However, such language could be said to be a concept associated with women and adapted from natural role they adopt during childbirth and afterwards (Cree, 2003). Women are brought up to believe that caring for others is a fundamental part of their existence (Powell Hewitt, 2002). This argument suggests that there are fundamental differences between men and women. Women are said to be emotional and caring so are more associated with the humanistic types of work such as undertaking the physical care of a person (Sharkey, 2000). Whereas, men are considered to be less emotional, hold authority and power, whereby management is seen as a natural course within their career (Jones, 2003). It has been further suggested that assumptions of being a successful manger, or similar status jobs, is based largely on male behaviour (Malin, 2000). However, a study of research undertaken on leadership styles by Malin (2000) found that women were similar to men in terms of leadership styles and therefore just as suitable to be managers. Any differences found were said to be qualities such as feelings and emotions, that organisations may need more of this in the future (Means et al, 2003). However, despite there being similarities in leadership style, for women who seek a management post, their feelings and emotions represent a block. Women are expected to undertake the more emotional caring tasks, whereas men are perceived to be more suitable to the macho task of management (Yeates, 2001). Advertisements for management posts reflect this attitude, with a notable absence of references to caring. Designed to reflect the status of the post, usually include language such as target. analytical, objectivity, determination, placing importance on salary, related packages, expectations to work outside normal hours and high status (Zinn, 2008). It could be argued, management positions that are advertised using language that is bureaucratic and masculine in their approach are designed specifically to attract able bodied white men (Jones-Devitt Smith, 2007). It could be argued, the very nature of the job specification only serves to exclude and further marginalise women. This is synonymous with the glass ceiling phenomenon, whereby women face obstacles when moving into management such as dominant male attitudes and culture, discrimination and womens own expectations (Carney, 2006). Subsequently, this presents several fundamental problems for women. The policies and procedures of organisations are being managed by men to benefit men, important decisions are undertaken by men and women suffer discrimination, womens skills and abilities are not being utilised (Clarke, 2004). It is important to understand, however that for many women workers within social care they are already victims of abuse of power, at work and home, as carers of the system and by individuals. For example studies of gender abuse, have found abusers are overwhelmingly men (Moonie, 2004). It could be argued that the abuse of power is part of the fabric of womens lives (Glasby Littlewood 2009). According to Moonie (2004) men are the very group who perpetrate most of the abuse which result in individuals requiring social services intervention, are themselves in positions of power, such as managers, within organisation. For example in 1991 a number of men who held positions of responsibility within care homes were found guilty of physical and sexual abuse of children in their care (Zinn, 2008). It could be argued; therefore it is not possible for a group of people to make sound decisions regarding victims of abuse, if they themselves abuse their power. Therefore, if women are to challenge this abuse of power, they need to be given equal access to management; therefore human resource policies should facilitate this. Women are brought up to believe a fundamental part of their role is to care; they have the advantage of trying to juggle home life with work life (Yeates, 2001). Work/life balance policies, flexible working, part time working and crà ¨che facilities are some responses to enabling women to participate as men do. According to Zin (2008) these responses are a solution invented by men aimed specifically for women under the guise of equal opportunities. This only serves to reinforce male and female stereotypes (Miller, 2004). Furthermore, management posts are not always included in such equal opportunity policies and therefore, likely to exclude a higher proportion of women from management. Although arguably, a change in retention and recruitment policies to enable women to become managers is important to facilitate this, it could be further argued, a change in attitude and culture regarding gender roles is more fundamental (Powell Hewitt, 2002). Women it seems are acceptable management material if they are the same as men and unsuitable if they differ. A workforce study undertaken by the National Institute for Social Work found workplace attitudes to be reflective of society a third of staff surveyed reported incidents of racism from colleagues and managers, with 45% reporting such behaviour from service users and their relatives (Jones-Devitt Smith, 2007). Feminists argue that a focus on structural change and a challenge of dominant male assumptions is the way forward if attitudes are to change (Jones, 2003). Furthermore, it could be argued the structure of social services only serves to reinforce the attitude of women as carers. For example residential workers, home care assistants, care worker, roles usually undertaken by women (Adams et al, 2009). Therefore, a removal from dominant patriarchal attitudes appears to be a long way off. Theories of how organisations structures functions are broadly male dominated and further serve to reinforce the ideology of management (Cochrane, 2001). As a result the structures and processes of social work within social services are also basically masculine. The hierarchical principles and management of social services departments are associated with pyramidal structure of authority and control (Cochrane, 2001). It could be argued, this supports the view that patriarchal values remain embedded within organisations but interestingly, conflict with the caring role of social welfare organisation. An organisation with a flatter structure where there is no hierarchy, but each person takes on a specific role for the benefit of the organisation and the client, is more synonymous with the caring aspect of social work. Also that of a feminist theory, whereby organisations take a collective approach (Scott, 2004). This type of organisational structure can be seen within smaller voluntary organisations (Clarke, 2004). Organisations such as social services are structured within a more bureaucratic, hierarchical style. Clarke (2004) believed that where there were high numbers of employed staff, it was necessary to initiate rules and procedures within a clear line of command. As a result of this masculine model of organisational structure, policies, consciously or subconsciously, reinforce the idea that gender differences are a product of nature rather than social construction (Yeates, 2001). Once a person becomes a manager, their effectiveness is dependent on several factors including style. Yeates (2001) introduced the scientific management approach. It required workers to undertake tasks in a specific way in an attempt to make organisations rational, studying how management methods could effectively control the workers in other words, how to find the most efficient ways of doing a job (Scott, 2001). This appears to fit with bureaucratic mechanisms within a large social welfare organisation. In contrast Deacon (2002) considered the importance people make within organisations and identified a humanistic approach to management. He believed the behaviour of people produced an informal structure which influenced how an organisation functioned, which in turn influenced which management methods should be adopted (Deacon, 2002). Clarke (2004) argues that managers can adopt interpersonal approaches and be open and honest showing their real feelings rather than adopting an authoritarian approach by checking up on staff. This method seems compatible to work within social care, rather than the masculine traits traditionally associated with management styles (Bauld et al, 2000). It could be argued, however that management is a balance of the two, a combination of problem solving, such as case management, organising the department, resources etc, and affective interpersonal skills. Within male dominated environments, this balance can be difficult to achieve (Powell Hewitt, 2002). For women managers, to show a caring side could be perceived as weak. If a woman adopts a male approach she is considered aggressive. She is seen as different and not compatible with what is the perceived norm (Brechin et al, 2000). In some cases, adopting the male style of management and fitting the culture of masculinism can produce a negative and unproductive style of management for example women mangers not approving of mothers who have children pursuing a career (Bradshaw, 2004). For some this may not pose a problem, having wanted and being able to gain a senior management position. For others, they have felt in order to survive it has been necessary to adopt the male style of management but do not to notice it any more.(Dominelli, 2004) This means women are pressured to join prevailing norms, if they want to avoid being different (Deacon, 2002). Statutory provision within social care could be said to support this argument. child protection work is considered a controlling aspect of social work, which fits with the controlling aspects of management (Payne, 2005). Interestingly enough, this is synonymous with the community care framework and the concepts of care mangers. Tibbs (2001) argues this is another strand in the masculinsation of management within social services. However, the values that are fundamental to the caring role for the client within social services is not necessarily transferred into the values of management of care as management becomes increasingly bureaucratic and procedural (Nazarko, 2004). Furthermore, tasks that consider the care of the customers and staff are essential within an environment that requires a supporting management team (Jones-Devitt Smith, 2007). Womens contribution should be widely recognised if such a service is implemented. Work undertaken by Bradshaw (2004) found organisations that are managed by people who believe in the potential of workers and customers, produces excellent organisations. This language appears to be intrinsic within the modern social services department, whereby best value, quality protect and performance indicators underpins governments strategy for improving services and working environments (Glasby Littlechild, 2009). This philosophy on caring is further emphasised by awarding star ratings for local authorities for providing high quality services. Within this philosophy of caring environment, it is likely that more women would be attracted to management posts and take part in the organisations quest for excellence (Killick Allan, 2001). Moonie (2004) indicates women managers have much to offer the organisation since the emergence of customer care and total quality management. Although Miller (2004) suggests this simply is a political move, under the guise of community care legislation, a way of meeting resource demands and residualing services. As a result of the market of care, consumerism and competition, there is pressure for local authorities to become more business like (Deacon, 2002). Senior managers are now recruited from the commercial arena where it appears, they know nothing about social care. With the emergence of business management posts and the values and models that underpin those of a commercial organisation, such as marketing strategies and performance indicators, bureaucratic procedures and control increases (Jones, 2003). Nevertheless in an organisations quest for excellence women managers could prove invaluable. Tibbs (2001) argues that women managers will have a tendency to put issues of staff care, such as support and supervision above administration. Leadership or management within a group is central to the function of facilitating organisation or group effectiveness and performance (Payne, 2000). Therefore a manager who is humanistic in their approach, it seems is able to meet current government policy with regards to welfare provision (Miller, 2004). Looking for the impact of effective leadership in more detail it is necessary to consider the concept of leadership and also the role of the manager in supervision (Carney, 2006). Leadership can be performed at an informal level within the team or at an organisational level (Butcher, 2006). Research into leadership by Carney (2006) established that satisfaction and group effectiveness can be affected by the type of leadership within the group (Carney, 2006). Although, Cochrane (2006) proposes that leadership roles vary according to the managed level within the organisation. According to Cree (2003) the most important element is influence and that leadership suggests a process of group support, goal achievement and group contentment. To understand leadership, it is necessary to understand the distinctions between managed and leadership, Deacon (2002) argues to be an effective manager it is necessary to exercise the role of leadership. Considering this, leadership is not necessarily just a function of a formal manager but acts of leadership by a person who has specific leadership qualities (Bradshaw, 2004). For example a manager is said to have continually co-ordinate and balance in order to compromise conflicting values (Powell Hewitt, 2002). Whereas leaders, may work in but can be said not to belong to an organisation. They are able to consider what events and actions mean and express empathy with other people. (Jones-Devitt Smith, 2007). It could be argued womens attributes are compatible with the philosophy of empathy and consideration for others (Glasby Littlechild, 2009). Cree (2003) suggests that leadership styles are more effective and more consistent with the type of humanistic management that social w ork requires. Supervision is an also an arena where women, it could be said function better than men (Moonie, 2004). Women maybe more able to empathise and discuss an individuals issues and concerns. However it could be argued this may be too simplistic. According to Miller (2004) not all women may be able to undertake effective supervision, whereas there may be male managers that are equally as capable of adopting a humanistic style of supervision. Payne (2000) suggests that regardless of what attributes that can be brought to supervision there are areas of supervision which may hinder team work and professional development. Supervision may be unavailable due to time restrictions, the abuse of power such as withholding information or asserting negative control, a lack of feeling supported particularly as managers are not in touch with service users lives (Tibbs, 2001). Certain leadership styles may determine how effective supervision is for team members and supports Adams (2003) view of discrepancies in supervision. Social services departments have a history of retention and recruitment and this reflects in inconsistent management (Thompson, 2002). For example, regardless of gender differences, some managers work in a democratic way, consistent with the humanistic approach (Sharkey, 2000). However others may adopt a more authoritative supervision process. This can have the effect of controlling or obstructing team members as a result of asserting authority or power over decision making (Carney, 2006). Subsequently, this can leave managers with high levels of dissonance within the team, which in turn, affects the effectiveness of the team (Jones-Devitt Smith, 2007). Butcher (2006) indicates the supervision process can become a management tool of accountability but suggests it can be also be used as a tool to improve personal and professional development and practice. If supervision is to encourage personal satisfaction and encourage group cohesiveness and effectiveness, it should go below the surface in the analysis of problems and situation (Adams et al, 2009). It could be argued a feeling of being listened to and heard can only serve to increase team moral and performance. In turn effective supervision can be used as a tool for negotiation, problem-solving and more importantly learning (Adams et al, 2009). Women managers could use supervision to make their own individual mark on the workforce without the need of masculine formal systems and practices (Butcher, 2006). By paying attention to things that matter to people which are often neglected such as enquiring about the progress of a problem or a staff member needs to leave work on time to meet childcare commitments (Bradshaw, 2004). As mentioned, this method of working can develop team moral and performance, such as effective team and collaborative working. Facilitating teams to work collectively together to identify areas of organisational improvements and service delivery, it could be argued is considered a necessary requirement of professional workers within social services (Brechin et al, 2000). The caring strand of management means women are at an advantage when it comes to utilising these skills in management, in particular women are brought up to think about other peoples needs to empathise and listen (Zinn, 2008). Indeed it is not to be said that the caring tasks should be done by women alone only to validate the skills women bring to the role of manager, through their perceived roles as carers (Scott, 2001). In terms of operational planning, women managers are able to influence the situation and bring along new understanding of management for both men and women, rather than the traditional methods (Bauld et al, 2000). Instead of an aggressive style, an assertive style will allow individuals to stand up for themselves. People can manage in a supportive way in order to empower and obtain consensus rather than conflict (Thompson, 2002). Patriarchal norms and mens way of behaving does not have to be considered the norm. It could be said, women should be taken seriously without having to act like men (Alcock, 2000). Both men and women can validate the caring side of managing within social services, recognising both work and personal commitments. This is increasingly evident for social workers within social services; managers appear to be more responsive to the holistic needs of staff (Banks, 2001). Moonie (2004) suggests it is difficult to determine whether there has been a genuine commitment of the organisation towards recognising workers needs or the fact that the majority of middle managers consist of mainly women who are generally more sympathetic in their approach. Payne, (2000) outlines it could also be political, due to the nature of the work within statutory social services, has inevitably led to recruitment and retention crisis, whereby this needs to be effectively managed if standards are to be maintained. Power can be used in an ethical and caring way to empower both clients and workers. Paying more attention to the abuse of power, workers must limit their use of controlling power (Glasby Littlechild, 2009). Women can learn to understand power and be less afraid and use it more directly. Managers can use power in positive ways, such as implementing equal opportunity policies (Carney, 2006). Caring itself should be challenged as a concept. No longer synonymous with womens work, it should be constructed as a role that all people can undertake, a skill to be learnt by both men and women (DoH, 1999). Women can stop automatically undertaking the caring jobs. This in turn will serve to change the attitudes and perceptions society has of specific gender roles. Finally government legislation should be strengthened and include enhanced equal opportunity laws and substantial improvements to maternity benefit and leave. Carney (2006) argues that underpinning all policy are principles that men should also be responsible for childcare and that childcare should be publicly funded and community based and most importantly there should be a balance between family life and paid work and leisure activities. Social work is a changing profession dominated by men, who make policies for an essentially controlling activity (Dominelli, 2004). However social services have a culture of caring whereby the majority, which are women, are committed to this ethos. It could be argued that women endeavour to support this caring ethic and are challenging a patriarchal structure by using good human relationship skills and attention to quality of service. reconnebarthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03062518187879694319noreply@blogger.com0
